In terms of being the most powerful? Especially if you factor in warrior mentality, internal energy, outer skills, etc?

I may have to go with Ling Hu Chong.

YU SO CHAU PASSED AWAY FROM PNEUMONIA

Famous wuxia star Yu So Chau on May 12th passed away at 89 in the U.S. from pneumonia. Yu So Chau was the eldest disciple of her father Yu Jim Yuen trained and formed "Seven Little Fortunes". As a member of the "Seven Little Fortunes", Jackie Chan yesterday stressed that he would always remember this "big sister" and even said that he was her most loyal fan.

Yu so Chau passed away in the U.S. last week from pneumonia with her family by her side. Her family has already planned for services on May 22 from 5PM to 8PM in a San Francisco funeral home with the funeral to take place the next day.

Originally named Yu Fung, Yu So Chau was a famous martial art opera and film star of the 50s and 60s. She performed in over 400 films. She was born into a Beijing Opera family. Her father was a famous Beijing Opera martial art actor Yuen Jim Yuen. Under the influence of her father, she began to study opera early on. She excelled in hands free Northern Style and created the "double fly" spear kick with her father -- front, back, side spear kick styles. Later many younger generations followed suit.

Yu So Chau began her film career in age 14, the eldest disciple of her father Yuen Jim Yuen trained and formed "Seven Little Fortunes". Other members included Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen Kwai, Yuen Bun, Yuen Qiu and others.

Speaking of the passing, Jackie Chan replied, "I once said that I, Chan Kong Sun's father, was Chan Chi Ping. Jackie Chan's father was Yu Jim Yuen. Ms. Yu So Chau was my sister! Her life was very well lived, and she left many films that we could be proud of. I am her most loyal fan and family member. We would always remember her and forever miss her!"

Veteran actress Nancy Sit Ka Yin began her career during the Cantonese film era, she has worked with Yu So Chau. Sister Ka Yin said, "Yu So Chau, Law Yim Hing, Ng Kwan Lai and others were the Eight Peonies. We with (Josephine) Siao Fong Fong, (Connie) Chan Bo Chu were the Seven Princesses. I worked with So Chau when was very little. She was Master Yu Jim Yuen's daughter. Her father was Northern Style so she learned martial art since she was little. Her kung fu was great. She worked with Cho Tat Wa on many wu xia films. I worked with her when I was little, she was pretty and a good fighter. She was very famous then, everyone in the film industry praised her."

Sister Ka Yin also recalled when Yu So Chau worked on movies someone dubbed her voice live on the set. She said, "Yu So Chau was from out of province, her Cantonese wasn't too great. For her Cantonese films she needed to be dubbed for every one. On the set her mouth moved, behind the camera Lai Kun Lin said her lines for her. They were very well synchronized. so Chau didn't need post production voice work because on the set someone dubbed her live. We haven't seen each other in many years, of course I am very saddened to hear about her passing. I would like to send my condolences to her family. When everyone watch her films again, they would remember her again. She made great contribution to the film industry."

Donnie Yen Chi Tan said that the passing of Yu So Chau was very regrettable. Did Mother Yen know Yu So Chau? He said, "I don't know, I have seen all her movies -- especially her BUDDHA'S PALM with Cho Tat Wa. I can still remember her character the Invincible Flying Ring Suen Bik Ling. She has been my idol very early on. When I was little I even constantly played Cho Tat Wa and used Buddha's Palm."

Yu So Chau began her film career at age 14 and performed in over 400 films. The Cantonese wu xia film BUDDHA'S PALM and THE LEGEND OF MADAME WHITE SNAKE were more well known. She and Cho Tat Wa were even linked in rumors while making BUDDHA'S PALM and were considered the best on screen couple.

In addition, Yu So Chau was known as the "Black Peony". This nickname came from her "Eight Peonies" fan club with seven friends. The "Eight Peonies" were the top 8 stars of the period. They even became sisters. Aside from Yu So Chau, the remaining 7 Peonies included "White Peony" Ng Kwan Lai, "Silver Peony" Law Yim Hing, "Red Peony" Fung Wong Nui, "Blue Peony" Tang Bik Wan, "Purple Peony" Yu Lai Chun, "Green Peony" Nam Hung, and "Yellow Peony" Lam Fung.

Yu So Chau since marrying Cantonese opera star Mak Bing Wing in 1966 retired from show business, immigrated to the U.S. and spent a peaceful life with her children and grandchildren. On her free time he would play mahjong for fun. She rarely appeared in Hong Kong, but occasionally she would meet with her fans. Yu So Chau's final public appearance was the 50th Anniversary of the "Seven Little Fortunes" in 2009 with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu and others.

What makes someone a piano\guitar player?

Hello, I've been thinking about this very often but I just can't explain it. I have a keyboard in my house and I can play many songs and pieces of music, I learned them by synthesia, I can't read or write music sheet but I noticed that I'm improving because I used to find many songs hard to play but now they're much easier, could this be possible? I mean that playing an instrument will be much easier and you'll be professional if you keep practise and learn songs without even knowing notes\chords\etc. Anyway, I know a lot of artists and bands who know nothing about writing or reading music from sheets. How did they become to what they are now?

What makes them artists if they can't read music sheets? Let's suppose you teached someone how to play thousands of songs on piano but he still can't read music sheets and don't know about chords and stuff. Is he a piano player? I'm just trying hard to express my idea, many singers play piano but they can't read music sheets, so basically there isn't something special about them, they just play what they used to practice! (For example: Chris Martin - Coldplay. Thom Yorke- Radiohead)

I'd be happy to explain more if you want..

Why are lightsaber blades straight?

This might seem like a silly question some elementary school children might ask. But if they were to ask it, how would you answer?

Einstein said that gravity can bend light.

It's not inconceivable a lightsaber could bend its laser blade just the same to give it a slight curvature.

I thought that GL wanted to imitate the Samurai weaponry as close as possible.

So why are lightsaber blades straight?

Why did GL hire a wushu master (rather than kendo, karate, etc.) to play Darth Maul

Evryone already knows the fact, if not by the end of the sentence that Ray Park, the actor who played Darth Maul on the big screen was a wushu international champ.

So, the question is, why did GL hire a wushu master to play Darth Maul (when he could have had one from kendo, karate, judo, or whatever Japanese discipline?)

And didn't STAR WARS happened after GL watched some Samurai flicks (The Hidden Fortress, Seven Samurais, etc.)?

ANSWER: It (STAR WARS) didn't. It actually derives from Jin Yong's Condor Trilogy (SW happened in the late 70's vs Condor Trilogy's early 60's publish dates. Cause vs effects). STAR WARS came from Jin Yong wuxia.

Why does Supreme Leader Snoke look like a Shaolin monk?

Just another silly elementary school children question.

Why does Snoke look so much like a Shaolin monk with shaved head.

I thought the whole SW ordeal started when GL watched some Japanese Samurai flicks.

So, why did Snoke not look like this:

But, instead, his looks modeled after this:

ANSWER: B/c STAR WARS derives from Jin Yong wuxia where Shaolin monks are a stapple of the characters roster in his later works (ie. HSDS)

Why did STAR WARS suddenly recruiting British actors/actresses?

Don't ask me about the OT. I don't know the backgrounds of any of the actors/actresses. The actor who played ObiWan, he looked sort of British to me...

Anyways,

Why is STAR WARS going big on British talents now? Finn is just some Brit pretending to be American with faked accent.

ANSWER: B/c STAR WARS derives from Jin Yong's works. It was first published in Hong Kong under the name of Condor Trilogy. Hong Kong was under British rule until handed back to China in late 90's.

The Brits in the ST are a sort of "Easter eggs", if you will, to acknowledge SW's true birth place...

Huang Yaoshi's and Hong Qigong's martial arts styles

Inspired by the 2017 LOCH series, I started rereading the novel, and came across this.

"Silly fellow, you have a good heart. Simple-minded and honest," laughed
Hong Qi-Gong. "Tell you what, I'll teach you one stance called 'The
Proud Dragon Repents'. With Huang Yao Shi being so full of himself, I
doubt he will stoop to the level of learning my specialty skill even
though he admires it. Besides, we have very different styles of martial
arts. I can't learn his kungfu, and neither can he learn my kungfu."

Guo Jing later taught the Wu brothers some of the palms, and Yelu Qi the full set. However, consider Yang Guo, who was taught Peach Blossom Island skills by Huang Yaoshi, and the Dog Beating Stick by Hong Qigong, and who later self-created Sad Palms, which rivalled in his execution the fierce power of Guo Jing's Dragon Palms. If Yang Guo still had both arms, but had somehow trained in Dugu Qiubai's skills (ie. the original timeline except he still has both arms), could he have learned Dragon Palms? If so, what does it say about Hong Qigong's assertion? If not, does Yang Guo lack the required temperament in some way?

At Shaolin, why did YBQ wanted to take on LHC after Taoist Chongxu admitted defeat?

My initial guess was that YBQ wanted to test his BXJF, but it didn't make sense as it would expose himself and further more, he wanted to hide his skills till the election of the leader.

Nonetheless, her heart belongs to Chi Yun. The two made a promise to meet annually under the peach blossoms of Jiu Li, where Chi Yun made Qingmo a promise of love, that he will give up everything, and stay by her side for the rest of their lives.

Sai Mun Chui Sheut's sword manual....wait...SWORD MANUAL?!

$
0
0
In the final LUK SIU FUNG story, LAUGHTER OF THE SWORD GOD, the main villains, at one point near the end of the story, took Sai Mun Chui Sheut prisoner (or so they believed; my view is that SMCS allowed himself to be "caught" so that he could find the missing and believed-dead Luk Siu Fung more quickly). The villains believed they had an opportunity to kill SMCS easily while he was their captive, but they demurred on acting upon this belief too quickly because first, they wanted to get their hands on his sword manual, in which supposedly SMCS had recorded his peerless sword technique.

I believe LAUGHTER OF THE SWORD GOD was started by Gu Long, but due to severe illness (which would ultimately claim his life), a friend of his finished the story. There are several problems with a SMCS sword manual that did not fit how Gu Long portrayed the character of SMCS.

1. First, SMCS did not have a sword technique per se, with set stances and routines. In fact, his "technique," such as it was, was the complete opposite of that: it was a read-and-react style that required allowing the opponent to make the first move so that SMCS could spot and attack the flaws and the vulnerabilities in the opponent's technique. Unless SMCS was in the habit of keeping meticulous notes on the flaws and weaknesses of each enemy technique he encountered, I can't imagine there was much to fill this so-called "sword manual" with.

2. As a corollary of the first point, SMCS's approach to the sword was something he intuitively understood, but was probably ineffable to others. Words probably would not be adequate to express how he approached using the sword...he just intuitively KNEW. Again, this is not germane to writing a sword manual.

3. It's out of character for SMCS. Can you envision him spending hours writing out a martial arts manual? That's not how the character operates.

4. Who would the manual be for? The son he abandoned? It's not like SMCS was eager to tell the whole world how his sword technique worked, even if he could. SMCS likely reckoned that when he dies, his sword dies with him.

So I submit that Gu Long himself would never have personally conceived of this bit with SMCS's sword manual, and that his friend introduced this idea without fully understanding the character.

Luk Siu Fung's "Phoenix Dancing in the Nine Heavens"

$
0
0
The sixth LUK SIU FUNG novel was titled PHOENIX DANCING IN THE NINE HEAVENS, which was not only the title of the story, but also the name of the secret (until that point) and most powerful martial art practiced by Luk Siu Fung.

Gu Long doesn't say much about how Phoenix Dancing in the Nine Heavens (the martial art) works because, well, that's not how Gu Long rolls. Still, LSF was able to use this technique to defeat the story's powerful villain, Gung 9. Until this story, LSF's most powerful and best-known martial art was his Ling Sai Finger Technique, but apparently, Phoenix Dancing in the Nine Heavens is a whole other level of awesome. Gung 9's martial arts were such that he would dwarf LSF if the latter used his regular martial arts or Ling Sai Finger, but Phoenix Dancing in the Nine Heavens was able to defeat Gung 9.

By extension, if LSF were to use Phoenix in the Nine Heavens more frequently, then his erstwhile friends and peers Sai Mun Chui Sheut and Yip Goo Sing would not be his match.
